90 Gallon Overflow
I am in the market for a new 90 gallon tank. I am upgrading from a 29 gallon Biocube. I am hoping you can help me out with some questions on the overflow. I want the overflow built-in to the tank and drilled. I would like it to be as efficient and quiet as possible. Any recommendations? It seems like different manufacturers have different overflows. So if you have any input or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Dave |

Dave, Most of the manufacturers build there overflows the same way. As long as you get a reputable tank, All Glass, etc. you will be fine. The only difference really, will be the location of the overflow. Hope this helps. James

Dave, James is right. They all drill the bottom, it's more about where. The difference is in how you plumb the holes. The other thing I'd be looking at is, how big the holes are. I ended up using both holes for drains and did my return to the DT over the back of the tank. If I were doing it again, I'd have at least one more, maybe 2 more holes drilled and capped off for future use. I added 1 hole for a CL system and another one as a direct feed to my skimmer.

Thanks Ron and James for the quick response. I am thinking of having a custom tank built, so I am really looking to see what people think their ideal solution would be. If you were starting with a clean slate on a 90 gallon, what would you do? How many overflow drains and how many returns? What size holes? etc.

If you are going to start with a 90, I wouldn't do anything except buy it as is. You will be fine with the setup that is on it from the start. If you are going to have one built, I would go with starfire glass with two overflows in the back so you would have plenty of circulation.
