Plastic Garbage Can Safe?

I bought a Roughneck Rubbermaid plastic garbage bin to mix saltwater in.
On the bottom it says it's number 2 plastic recycle group.

Is this safe? Should I do any special kind of treatment to it before use?

Thanks!

I don't know if that particular trash can is safe, but, I can know that the BRUTE trash cans from Rubbermaid are.

+1 The gray or white Brute cans are food/commercial grade/safe

If you are just mixing saltwater in it & using it in 24 hrs or less, there is no danger. If you plan on storing RO/DI water, then a food grade storage rating is ideal. However I don't think it really matters that much unless your water sits in there for months at a time without using, I use a blue 55g plastic "rain barrel" to store my water, I test it every month for TDS & phosphate, I've never encountered a problem & I have no idea if it's rated "food safe" or not.

The green ones are safe too. I think all the BRUTE trash cans are safe to store food in. It's stamped on the bottom of the can.

1337 posted this for me (my girlfriend) It's black, has the recycle logo arrows around a 2 and says HDPE underneath the recycle 2 logo.

This is for long term salt water storage. I usually buy premixed though might start mixing it again myself. Either way there will always be salt water in it with a pump. Might have a small heater (not touching on any side or bottom, suspended).

It's a 32G rubbermaid. There are a lot of mixed responses or info on other trashcans. Only one person has said its safe. So, more opinions would be really appreciated. Remember, this is for salt water storage, not RO.

No other suggestions?? The info around the net seems to place number 2 plastic in the safe category, but all I'm finding is info on food/water resuse. Nothing about SALT water.

Safe for food grade use means that it is safe for salt water too. Just look at it this way, if it is safe for us to drink and eat from, it is safe for aquarium use too.
