plumbing question
Just got a new pump (internal) for my tank. it's a mag 9.5 and I was told I may want to add a valve to it as it may pump too much water, which would be great as I want to expand it's use.
Anyway, it was suggested this valve be at least 12" from the pump to avoide too much back pressure so I've got some threaded pipe (12") to a ball valve to threaded (all 3/4"). Now I'd like to go to tubing as I already have that but what do you use for an adaptor? My 3/4" internal tubing will really need to stretch to go over the pipe and if that works should I cut the threaded end off or twist the tubing on? Hope that makes sense - If not I can shoot a photo. Thanks! |

3/4" hose barb adapter on other end of valve.

FWIW, the argument you have presented for having the valve a certain distance away from the pump is pure hogwash.

I just did the exact same on my 58 with my new mag 9.5. I have it T'd off to run an ATS and GFO reactor. I used a 3/4 to 1/2 reducer after the T, then I used a 45 into a threaded barb fitting.

Thanks for the replies - was wondering why 12" would be different then 6" - back pressure is back pressure... So where did you get the barbed adaptors, didn't see them in HomeDepot.
Also, I see you've glued everything - do threads not work? I don't know enough right now to design for the future and thought threads would be better... |

I'll stop back and did some more - next time I won't have my wife with me - she always wants to get in and out....
Teflon tape, think I have a few rolls around of that....... *****New question***** I saw extra outlets that ghellin added how much "EXTRA" flow do you think i"ll have. I've got a 90 gal and will need about 5' to get over the rim. I would imagine enough for a GFO but other? |

What is your overflow box like? That will determine how much flow you can run through the display tank, which will determine how much you have left over.
Most smaller "reef ready" tanks come with a single 1" drain. If that is the case, you will have plenty of flow left over. If you are thinking you might want to try to maximize the flow in order to split it out and run other equipment, I would seriously consider upsizing the plumbing. 3/4" is pretty restrictive on a mag 9.5. If all you're doing is valving it back to run as a return pump it makes no difference, but if you're trying to eek every last bit of performance, 1" or even larger will make a difference. If I recall, the manufacturer for the Mag-drive line specs that their flow ratings are measured with plumbing twice the diameter of the outlet on the pump, which means 1.5" for the 9.5.

Yes, it is a standard overflow box - I was thinking of adding another to get the flow better.
So you're saying even though I've got only a 3/4" outlet I could run 1.5" tubing everywhere and my flow wouldn't be hurt? That is great. So, I'm seeing a base pipe line of 1.5" line with maybe a few smaller outlets like for a GFO and carbon or something and don't know what else. With one or two drains what should I run up to the tank? 3/4", 1" or 1.5"? Thanks again! |

Yes I glued the slip fittings and used teflon tape for the threaded. Did not know the recommendations for larger pipe on the output of the pump thanks!
Oh as far as flow my GFO tumbles very well, and I still have the return restricted.
