Tunze vs Hydor Koralia

I have a 40 gallon cube. Dimensions 20 w x 18 l x 28 h.

What would be good flow for this tank? I have been looking at both tunze and hydor, but didn't know how many I would need in a tank that size.

Right now it is fish only. May get into some LPS corals at some point as well.

Would it be more beneficial to get 2-smaller units rather than 1 bigger, etc....

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Get the smaller ones, not a big one. The big one will blow your corals away and you can't reallly put anything in front of it.

I would go with two smaller pumps rather than one bigger pump. You will be able to better direct the water flow to needed areas with two pumps. For a smaller tank like yours I would go with the Koralia nano. The Tunze pumps are great, but their flow is focused on a slightly smaller area for a longer throw. In a smaller tank, the wider water distribution of the Koralia is better since you don't need to push water across a long tank.

Should I go with two 550 gph units or two 750 gph units?

^550's if your planning on keeping on LPS, would go 750 or 1050 if you plan on going SPS... I have two 750's decent flow but nothing extreme

The 550s hardly move any water at all it seems like. I have a 750 in my 20 gallon tank and I still don't think it's enough flow. The 550s would be a waste unless you want a ton of dead spots in the tank.

I ended up going with two 750's. Hoping that these two along with the return flow will be enough.

Should I be ok with that much flow?

I had 2 Hydor Koralia 750s in my 40B. I thought it was too much flow, so I knocked it down to 1 750 and a 425. I may be going back to 2 750s after I get some more coral "blocking" in my tank.

@Dont know why your 550s dont push anything.

I have a 240 and a 550 in my 25g cube and I DEFINATLY had that issue with the 240, but the 550 pushed great. With the 2 powerheads and my return pump sending water straight up through my rock work I have pretty good flow. When I feed none of the mysis settle on the ground (which makes my nassarius snails mad!).

Would think two 750s would be great for a 40g tank. As much flow as you can get without having it blow around the sand is the best imo. THere will always be spots in the rock work for lower flow corals and soft spots for fish to hide in, but in general more flow helps keep the crud off the sand.

Already second guessing myself.

I am wondering if two smaller Tunze Nano's would be the route to go based on their size. Would these be "too much" flow in the tank or would it be pretty good?

I have the 425 nano in my 20 long and I feel like it doesnt get halfway across my tank. I am just ordered a tunze 6025. See what that adds

The Tunze nano streams are great. I'm not sure which I preper the most yet but the most streams I've had in one tank was a 37 gallon tank with two 6025s and two 6045s but it was a BB tank.

not sure how much you want to spend but if you get the tunze nano streams 6055 they are controllable so if you have to you can adjust the flow.
