Tangs in 180
I was looking to get a rimless 100, but my love for tangs has changed my mind ( I think lol )... I don't wanna make a decision without knowing what I can keep in it .... I wanted :
Blue Hippo Tang Blue Powder Tang Achilles Tang Blonde Naso Tang Orange Shoulder Tang My question is, can I have an Achilles and a Blue Powder since the body shape is similar ? |

You'll have to skip the hippo tang as it will get entirely too large for a 180g tank. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1946007

IMO if you put them in at the same time you will be ok, obviously there is always a chance that they will fight but i would think you will be good to go

You will need more than a 180 gallon tank for all of those tangs IMO. You would want a 10 foot tank to give all of those fish enough room to swim, so I would think that a 300 gallon(120"x2"x24") or so tank would be needed.
With the powder blue tang and achilles tang it will be hit or miss. Your best bet would be to add both of them at the same time. They should be the last additions to your tank because the powder blue tang is well known to pick on new additions to the point of death sometimes. If you can only fit a 180 gallon tank I would recommend only doing three tangs from your list not including the blonde naso or blue hippo tang as they need at least a 240 gallon tank. |

all of those could work in a 180 except the hippo. Though I personally wouldn't put more than 2 or 3 tangs into a 180, and I'd make sure they all had different body shapes.

Have you looked into any of the tangs from the genus Zebrasoma? It would probable be best and less stressful for you and the fish if you chose the orange shoulder, the powder blue OR achilles, and a tang from the Zebrasoma genus. IMO a 180 gallon tank is suitable for up to three larger sized fish that can live in that sized tank. You would be at that limit with the three tangs, then the rest of the fish should be smaller in size(under 4-5").

just a quick question - why is the recommended hippo tang tank so much larger than that of some of the other tangs? How big does a hippo tang get in captivity?

It has more to do with how much it likes to swim...
I've never seen one bigger than 10" in someone's tank, but I've heard up to 12" |

I had a blue hippo that I got from a friend who had it in a 125. It was about 5" when I got it and put it in my 180. Now it's about 6" and through some leaks in my 180 I ended up with the exact 125 that it was in before hand. It is still healthy, no ick and extremely happy. Doesn't pick on anything else, including the 2" blue hippo I'm holding for a friend while his tank is down. I believe if the rockwork is open enough to provide space to swim and hiding at night, then a 60" tank is acceptable. I'll probably get bashed for that though lol.
