I run 100 micron and I have to change mine every 3 - 7 days. I can't imagine how often you'd have to change out a 1, 5, 10 or 25. Maybe a 25 would work, but it would probably have to be changed daily. Maybe on special usage they'd be good, like if you stired something up.

My lfs only seems to get 200 micron socks and it's an every other day cleaning/switch for me. I definitely need to find some 3 or 4 hundred size units. Definitely no need to go smaller than a 200, imo

the smaller mesh like posted above can be useful in applications such as dosing lanthanam chloride for po4 control. Thanks for the link!

I use 200 felt on my 75 ga. I have to change within 5 days or it will overflow. I'm only running a mag 3 return, about 300 gph into sump. I tried the mesh sock but it seemed to leave my tank a little cloudy. Ill use the mesh when I go on vacation.
Maybe a 25 Micron could be used on a separate small pump as a polishing filter. I could not see more than 50 gph flow with out having to clean several times a day.

I use the 100 micron polypropylene felt and change them every 4-5 days. I've found that washing them in the washing machine with bleach overtime degrades their micron rating.

I use 3- 100 micron socks which I change frequently (I have a trigger who just loves to dig!) Change them 2x a week when he does not feel the need to dig. I do not use clorox, I just wash them on "Sanitary" in my LG front loader. They eem to hold up wel. I have some that are 1.5 years old and still going strong.

What do I search for? I put in "filter sock" and all I got was 2 hits for some big bio filter thing!?

A 25 might be nice for water changes and cleaning?

http://www.aquariumfilterbags.com (filterbags.com)Just found this site by searching. They seem to have good prices and a good range of micron socks. Only downside is you have to order $35 (not including shipping.

I use 2 7"x16" 50 micron polypropylene felt bags on my 400 and change them out every other day or so. I got them from http://www.filterbag.com/ for $3.50 each. I wash them inside out with bleach and hot water with the machine set on presoak and extra rinse. I then let them air dry and they are good to go, you could also give them a rinse with prime. When they show any signs of wear at $3.50 each I toss them.

100's and 200's need to be changed out to often. I like 400's. I tried 800 and they never had to be changed out so I wouldn't go that route.

The good thing about the 400's is that they last a couple weeks and the cost is very low on them because they are thin. They are easy to clean, but with there low cost I just throw them out. I might try 300's.

I think the 100's and 200's never come clean after there first use and clog very quickly from then on.

I look for bags that are more like a net and not like felt. The felt type are so hard to turn inside out and clean.

I use the 100's felt. I have three. I swap them out about every five days. I wash them two at a time in the clothes washer with some bleach , Rinse in RO water and dry. Seem to work well, pull out a lot of stuff and keeps sump clean.

FWIW Bleaching these is completely unnecessary, and can lead to a build up of chloramines overtime. Bleach would kill any pathogens, of which are not typically a concern in a reef tank, since the whole process is biological and depends on the bacteria to perform their duty why ensure that they are destroyed? If you are washing these things and drying them before use then fauna is likely to die anyway. Bleach will mitigate the filter efficacy, and potentially lead to a build up of undesirable chemical precipitants that may lead to a mysterious crash and you may never know why. Just a thought, bleach doesn't really get them any cleaner, it just makes you think that they are.

Thats exactly what I think to, but, since my husbandry skills are horrible, I can not point the finger at anyone and say anything.
