Chromis temporarily paralyzed?

Ok, so I honestly don't know what happened but maybe someone might possibly shed some light.

I was feeding the tank as usual, talking to my wife so my full attention wasn't on the tank, when I look and suddenly see one of my chromis on the sand bed upside down.

His mouth was opening and closing but he was not swimming. He was close by to my pistol's den so I reached in and cupped him in my hand trying to figure out what happened. After about a minute or so he started moving again slowly and then suddenly was fully functional and swimming around as if nothing happened

I did not notice any marks or anything on him, but it seemed he spit out a piece of food after he started swimming again. Could he have swallowed too large a piece of food and would this have done this too him?

Or it could have been whacked by the pistol during a fight for food ?

That thought occurred to me but the pistol was actually down in his den with a chunk of shrimp already and I never heard any pop.
