Rock before sand?
Hi,
11 days after I got a 75 gallon tank it cracked. The manufacturer and retailer worked together and now, actually tomorrow, I get a new 90 gallon. I have something like 30 pounds of dry rock and 20 pounds of live rock which were in the 75 that I'm putting in the 90. I also have 80 pounds of live sand. Here's my question: Which goes in first? The rock before the sand or the sand before the rock? Thanks, TG |

That's how I just did my 40B eggcrate under the rock then add sand... Worked out great!

Would eggcrate still be ok to use if I'm planning on having burrowing livestock? I'm worried it will impede my goby & shrimp from making a burrow(?)

I wondered the same thing but saving my glass bottom from breaking seemed more important... :-) I suppose I could always add more sand...

I set my rock on eggcrate that is held above the sand by short pieces of PVC pipe that I drill a small hole in and use that to cable tie them to the eggcrate. This keeps the rocks off the sand and the glass as well as allows for sand dwellers to have lots of room. It as allows for great water flow even down at the bottom of the tank (no more cyano). I set smaller rocks around the edge of the eggcrate to hide it. It's easy and it works great.
