Cooking Rock advice

Hello all

I have some bubble algae that came on a frag I bought a long time(almost a year) ago not knowing how annoying it can be and spread in your tank. And it has spread.

Luckily for me I have only a few corals so I want to cook all my rock and hopefully start over.

I have a 125 gallon barebottom with around 100lbs of live rock that has been running for oh lets say a year. I just removed the sandbed less than a month ago.

If I remove all the live rock with no sandbed will my fish survive? I guess what I'm asking is there enough bacteria on the glass and on the bottom in the skimmer etc to maintain the life listed below

1 hippo
1 sailfin
1 clown
4 chromis
1 6 line wrasse

Thanks for your thoughts.

Simple answer...no. Have you tried tossing in a few mithrax crabs?

Removing all the live rock will remove your biological filtration.

@sugarmag I looked up the crab you suggested and know for a fact I can get a hold of emerald crabs will that work? don't think my LFS carries the crab I saw when I first did the search. I'm guessing they are the same thing.

I've always had success with mithrax crabs (emerald crabs) eating valonia.

option 2: buy about 20lbs of live rock fresh from the bin at lsf remove everything from my tank and throw the new rock in there - hoping no bubbles algae babbies are floating around at the time of xfer

ty sugar magnolia - I'm guessing using the crabs would be more wise since theres nothing stopping me from getting bubble algae in the future - wasting all the time spent cooking my current rock

^^^What Sugar said^^^

One emerald crab will take care of the problem in short order. At least that has been my experience.

Your mileage may vary.

It may be worth mentioning, that cooking rock will not necessarily solve your bubble aglae problem either. I had plague proportions of the stuff, and I removed 90%+ of my rock and cooked it for about 6 months. I still found a bubble here and there. no new ones, but the existing ones held on.

My success with mithrax crabs has been mixed. I read a thread somewhere that Live Aquaria guarantees that their crabs will eat bubble algae. My mithrax from a LFS didn't do much if anything at all. Also, the large bubbles probably need to be removed by hand.
