You may want to check out Connecticut Area Reef Society (CTARS) forum here on RC which is a local club to the CT area.

You could also do it the cheap way if you have the patience. Just find the cheapest website for base rock and get as much as you need then get a tiny piece of live rock and seed it. Sure free live rock would be great but it sounds like a long shot especially the bigger the tank you have. Unfortunately this is not a cheap hobby by far

Tell me when you find the freebies because I know I'll never give out free live rock! As addune said, go buy some dry rock and buy some live rock to seed the dry rock if you're looking at a cheaper option.

If you can't buy the stuff to setup a reef tank, how are you going to be able to pay to maintain it?

This isn't a cheap hobby.................Just Sayin'

People in my reef club would help him out no problem- I would give him a few lbs if he was local. Everyone has to start somewhere.

When people talk about seeding their rock, they're referring to starting with a big pile of dry rock and then adding one or two small pieces of live rock once the tank is up and running just to bring in some bugs/worms/bacteria/etc. It's much cheaper that way.

Though if you're trying to save money, skip anything with the word live in it. You can do just as well by starting with nothing but dry rock and sand and possibly a bacteria supplement to speed up the cycle. You'll need to find a way to add bugs if you choose a fish that eats them, but a clump of chaeto in the sump (if you have one) will take care of that. Some actually prefer starting their tank this way as it gives them control over what is added to their system. There's no unwanted pests in dry rock.
