Has anyone built a pod sanctuary that's not a fuge?

I don't have a Refugium, don't want one. I am running a biopellet reactor to keep phosphates and nitrates in control. I am thinking of building a small acrylic box with holes drilled in it, and put some filter floss/pads in it, and packing it with a bunch of amphipods and Copepods. They could live and reproduce in it and come out through the drilled holes when they want. This box could sit in my sump. Anyone ever used something like this or found another easy way to keep pods without creating a Refugium?

You could use a reactor or a old skimmer filled with rubble rock and just block off the airline. Or just put a bunch of rubble rock in your sump.

You really don't need to go nuts with acrylic.

Just make a couple small piles of rock rubble in the sump or display and that will work just fine.

I used a couple of media trays from an old Fluval canister filter and glued short legs (egg crate) underneath to keep it off the bottom and filled them with LR rubble. They're easily moveable/removable and being off the bottom won't allow detritus to become trapped.

How is rock rubble in the display any different than the live rock already in there? I need a place away from the fish for the pods to populate undisturbed.

How are the fish going to get in amongst tightly packed live rock rubble....?

I'll PM you a link for a "pod pile" set up that works great, and has a bit more security than just the rock piled up.

I'd put it here but RC Mods will just nuke the link anyways.

Quick update: Here are some pics and info about the pod house that I built out of acrylic to put in my sump, it's in my tank build thread on this page:

Wouldn't that be a refugium?

I guess by definition it might be, as a sanctuary for pods. But I was meaning without macro algae, sand, and the like. Just something simple for pods only. I ended up creating a small acrylic one that works well.

Gotcha. Your plan sounded solid, and it sounds like it worked out for you?

Yeah, it is working well. Not sure if you saw it, but I posted a link to the thread where I built the acrylic pod house a few posts above this one. It has some pictures.

Great Idea

I also run Bio Pellets and dont really want to keep my fuge. It is not really growing since the bio pellets. But being able to grow some pods is a great idea i want a mandarin.
