I'm a nikon fan. I use a d40x for everyday shooting and I also have a d5000. You really can't go wrong with a starter package that usually includes a lense, body and case to get you started. Be prepared, the only other hobby that costs more than reefing is photography. I have probably $5k+ in equipment. It's fun and you will see the world a bit differently once you get a lens in front of your eye. you'll see photo ops everywhere and you will always say "damn I wish I had my camera".

Obviously there are other brands out there such as ugh canon lol. Check out adorama for some used but great equipment. Also maybe stop by our RC photography forum.

Welcome to the other hobby.

I was in just this predicament about a week or 2 ago so I will throw in my opinion for what its worth. I posted in the photography forum and talked to a lot of folks about what camera to get. It really is up to you about how much effort you want to put into it to learn about taking pictures to get the quality full tank and macro shots that people post on here. After some research and several recommendations by the folks over there I settled on the top of the line point and shoot that canon makes: a G12

It depends on how into it you want to get. Point and shoots are going to be in your price range but if it's something you really want to get into, then a dslr is what you want to save for. I'm sure you can get a descent pioing and shoot for that price. Look for something with a macro mode for tank pics. Read your reviews carefully.

This is my carry for shooting bugs and flowers. Remove the flash and put it on a tripod for the tank.

I'd recommend doing a lot of research and browsing through RC's photography forum, paying particular attention to the Stickies.

To answer your question, I shoot with a Canon 7D w/100mm Macro, Canon 50mm 1.8 and Canon 18-200mmIS.
