True tank volume

I've been wondering with all the rock and substrate in a tank how to know how many gallons are actually in it. Say in a 125g with 125lbs live rock the volume has to drop at least 25 percent. Anyone figure this out?

I dont think its quite 25%. My 600g tank holds 500g of water and there is 500 lbs of LR in it.

If those dimensions are correct...you don't have a 600g tank!...could it be 40" instead of 46"???

According to the RC tank volume calculator, the tank is 688.2 on the outside dimensions. Im not sure what you mean... are you suggesting that I dont know how to use a tape measure?

I just put in the inside dimensions and it came out to 608.8g. Is that close enough to 600g for you.

The only real way of figuring out how much volume exactly your rock takes up would be to fill up a bucket, then put in the rock and measure the displacement. I'm sure a good estimate if you have all of the same rock in the tank is to take maybe ten pounds of rock out, see what its displacement is, and assuming similar density for similar rock type, you know a displacement per pound ratio and could figure it out.

First of all realize a 125 doesn't even hold 125 gallons. Volume is determined by outside measurements. My 180 held about 160 gallons when inside measurements and overflows were taken into account. Add live rock, corals, and a sump the best we can do is make an educated guess of actual water volume.

So you're saying it's a 688g tank (that everyone else would call 700g), BUT, you call it 600g?

Sorry that I doubted you, but you must be the only person on RC, that is quoting actual tank volume, in their signature! is the 46 bow front also actual volume?

You can use this calculator which takes into account how much live rock and sand you have in the tank. You have to know how many pounds of live rock and sand you have however.

No problem. Maybe I should start calling it a 700g tank... does sound more impressive.
