24" Cree 48x3w over a 4ft x 2ft tank

Can I use one Cree 24" 48x3w to light a 4ft x 2ft rimless tank?

You need to be more specific.

(1) What environment are you trying to create? What creatures are you trying to keep?

(2) How deep is your tank? Is the 2' dimension depth or width?

(3) What are the dimensions of the fixture?

(4) What type of CREE LED's are you talking about? What ratio of LED's? CREE is a manufacturer NOT a type - kinda like asking "can I use a Ford to pull a 4 ton trailer?" - first response will be "what kind of Ford?"

(1) What environment are you trying to create? What creatures are you trying to keep? Mixed Reef SPS up high LPS lower

(2) How deep is your tank? Is the 2' dimension depth or width? Tank is 30" deep

(3) What are the dimensions of the fixture? 24"X6"X3"

(4) What type of CREE LED's are you talking about? XP-G R5 and XP-E D3 Posible add some XM-L all with 60 degree lenses. What ratio of LED's? 24 XP-G's and 24 XP-E. Also thinking about 24 XM-L and 24 XP-E's CREE is a manufacturer NOT a type - kinda like asking "can I use a Ford to pull a 4 ton trailer?" - first response will be "what kind of Ford?"

You should be fine but... the SPS should be really in the upper 3rd of the tank. Also... since your tank is 24" wide, and I assume you will center the fixture between the back and front wall, you will probably want to shoot to have the prime SPS spots to be in the middle of the tank (back to front) in the upper 1/2 to 1/3 rd. And... you'll need to play w/the height at which you want to hang the lights.

I say this based on my experience w/a DIY 24 LED (XRE's) fixture, 12"x6" (12CW + 12RB) over a 30G (BioCube) hanging 2" above water w/no optics. My par measurements were about 120 at sand bed, 250 1/2 way up and >600 just below water level. The tank is about 20" long x 17" wide x 18" deep (main water chamber, not counting the back sump area). I could be off by an inch or two on the dimensions (haven't measured in a while), but they are close.

Spacey

You would need 2 to provide the best coverage. With your tank being that deep I would use the 60 degree or less (55 degree) to get enough penetration. Those lenses would take away ALOT of spread so to cover a tank that size, at least 2 would be needed probably to get the entire tank covered.
