Adding sand, OK to burry crabs, snails?

I'm adding new sand (Tropic Eden Miniflake ) to an established system. Since I just added my cleanup crew to bring my 'dead' tank back up to snuff... I have a lot of snails and crabs (blue and red leg hermits) that are frequenting the sand bed...

Is it OK to cover them? I don't mean like 3"... But 1-2" and a little bit over time as I add sand to the system. Will they dig out?

I would try real hard not to, but I know the hermits will unbury themselves if it is a very thin amount. Snails on the other hand may not be able to grip right in order to get out.
