quarantine tank, need one quick.
Never had a quarantine tank, but since I'm ordering fish online (tangs especialy) I figured I need to set one up.
They'll be here this week, so I need to get the tank up asap. I can use biospira to get the tank setup. My question: What should the heater be on? Along time ago at the pet shop the guy over the salt water tanks said to keep the water temp at 84 degrees to speed up ich and kill it. Also, what kind of filter? Just a HOB filter or? |

I'd keep the heater at the same temp as you keep your DT. Warmer temps won't kill ich (if it were that simple, people wouldn't have so many problems with ich). An HOB filter is fine, although I also use an airstone/air pump for added surface movement. +1 on the biospira. I used it to set up my QT the first time around...worked like a charm. That said, both copper and hypo can destroy/deplete the bacteria, so you should also get a Seachem ammonia alert badge and test the water regularly (not just rely on the fact that your tank was cycled before you started treatment).

The Miracle-Grow bacteria starters SOMETIMES work; however I'd sure have a container of new water mixing----I think you'll need to do a lot of WCs to control ammonia. Here's something I've posted a zillion times. It will make sure you can instantly cycle a QT?HT anytime you need it. BTW, smart move with the QT.
" In regards to Qt cycling; I've done this for years. Get a HOB filter; I really like Aqua-Clear, they have a big sponge and last forever. Don't use the carbon or ceramic noodles that come with the filter. Also, have some extra sponges on hand, they're cheap. Keep a sponge in the flow somewhere in your DT. When you need a QT or HT, just use the sponge that has been in your main system in your QT filter---the QT will be instantly cycled. When done, toss the sponge and keep a new one ready in your main system. BTW, Cupramine copper, used in a QT,will not destroy a bio-filter."

This is often a thread-ending question.

sorry to thread jack...but can i just fill up a QT tank with water from the DT and use the sponge i already have in the HOB filter on the DT for the QT ? (ha thats confusing)...seems like since i was using thast stuff already it wouldn't have to cycle?
i wanna get one setup so i can put a new fish in QT since i am taking my tank down for a re-do, and by the time i have the DTall finished and cycled i can put the fish in... |

I've been on the road (truck driver) the whole week and haven't had time to reply.
They went into my 75 gallon. I diden't have time to setup a QT so I acclimated them for a hour or two with the drip method and put it in there. One of teh tangs was DOA and the other is fine, swimming around and eating already. |

Never fails, there is always someone who sleuths out a members tank size from their profile just to tell them their tank is too small....
