75 gallon reef?

I am going to be getting a 75 gallon soon and I want it to be a saltwater reef. What do I need for it EXACTLY? I want to have a blue jaw trigger, a yellow tang, a blue tang (whatever kind I can keep in there. Maybe a Atlantic blue tang, or a powder blue tang, or a tang like the one from finding nemo), and some fire angels for sure. Maybe some clowns. How many of the fire angels and possible clowns could I out in there? What kind of corals would you reccomend? This is my first saltwater tank but I have been keeping tanks for 10+ years with total success. I am pretty sure that I will be able to handle most of the things that you suggest. I will do my research before getting anything as always.

Scratch all the Blue Tangs from your list, the Yellow Tang & Blue Jaw Trigger would be fine, a Flame Angel would also work well, keeping in mind they may nip at some corals. A pair of Clownfish would also nicely round out your stock list. As far as Corals go, I would start with a few easy to medium care corals, such as zoa's & leathers, maybe an open brain on the sand bed, a lot depends on water quality & proper lighting. Good luck.

I keep a few small fish in my 90g reef, I have found through experience that keeping too many fish & maintaing a SPS (small poylp stony) dominant reef is very difficult to do, so I have a few Blue/Green Chromis & a few dragonettes, Mandarin & spotted Mandarin, aka gobies, however I would not add them until at least 6 months to a year with plenty of live rock for them to graze upon. As far as suggesting another fish for you, I would say a Purple Tang but you must add it together with the Yellow Tang at the same time or they will never get along. Other than that, you could add a few smaller sand sifters such as a yellow sleeper and or diamond goby or firefish but beware, they are jumpers or carpet surfers.

So I could put a purple tang in with the trigger and everything? As long as I add it and the yellow tang at the same time?

I don't know if a yellow tang and a purple tang is a good idea, they are very similar in size and may have some dominance issues, especially in that small of a tank.

Purple tang is a bad idea, not only because of the yellow tang but because it needs at least a 120gl tank.

Jarred, you can successfully keep a Yellow & Purple Tang together if you purchase 2 small ones at the same time, one will become dominant, but then again every tank has a dominant Alpha fish, many people here will disagree because of the tank sizes, however I am one who believes the Zebrasomas can be kept in 75-120g tanks, the reason I originally said to scratch all the Blue tangs from your list is because they will get too big for your tank quickly. Trigger fish can get aggressive but normally Tangs are bold enough to take care of themselves, a Flame Angel & a pair of Clownfish will not present a threat to the others. Someone said too many fish for a 75g, 6 medium to big fish is ideal for your size, like I said if you wanted to add a dragonette or sand sifter goby later on, that would be fine, now I would agree that learning about this hobby before you dive in is a valuable asset.

And as far as corals, it depends pretty much on your lights, SPS corals need the expensive lights and soft corals in the other end can grow with a cheap light, but if you decide to add corals to your system make sure you get a good skimmer, good water flow, and a good light.
Keep reading the stickies and welcome to RC !!
