Heaters not enough? 92gallon

Hello. I have a 200w eheim jager running at the top setting(in the 90s) and The temperature wasn't cracking the 70s. So I placed an extra heater into the tank a theo hydor 400w. These are running in the main display while cycling and My temp is now at 78 degrees with both heaters set for the 90's...doh!
The 200w was used on my 54 gallon and the theo came free... So i guess i need to upgrade. I am looking for something compact to fit in the sump if possible. Any suggestions? Price is not an issue, but not looking to break the bank if i don't have to. Oh i am getting a neptune controller so no temp read out required. Please help i'm a little frustrated.

I would recommend the jager heaters. for my 125 I have 3 delegate 250watt heaters being controlled by a Neptune controller. last month during the coldest nights my temp dropped to 77.5 when I have the minimum she at 78.0. I could have gone with 1 more heater but over the last couple week s it hasn't dropped below 78.3.

a couple jager heaters coupled with an apex will definitely set you up for success.

be careful buying heaters. some of them explode. research them first. i've heard of people's tanks crashing from an exploding heater, i think they;re the titanium ones but i forget? the jager ones are good i think.

do you have powerheads? i found my powerheads and return pump (submerged) adds quite a bit of heat. ever since adding them to a T5 setup, i didn't need a heater. now that i have leds, i had to add a heater again but very low since my koralias still add quite a bit of heat to the tank.

The one heater that I know that had that problem was the ones sold at petco under their generic marineland brand. I believe that they have recalled all those offering a the owners full money back or replacement. last I heard they have fixed the problem.

However, I wouldn't doubt that there are other substandard heaters that will do the same, if that tends to be a concern there are heaters that claim to be shatter proof and you can search for those and be on the safe side.

To my knowledge jager has a good track record.

I love my Jaeger for my 92G. It's 250W, keeps perfect temp and I have just one Koralia in the tank at the moment. Even in a 64 degree room the temp was where it needed to be, 80 degrees. But, it's really long, 22 inches or so. I had a Jaeger running flawlessly in my other tank as well. They have a good reputation.

I run 2 jager heaters controlled by a Ranco temperature controller. As far as I know, that's one of the most bulletproof set up to go with. Whatever brand you go with, definitely go with 2 or possibly 3 smaller heaters rather than one big one.

Blue Line and Finnex has some great heaters. I just bought a couple Titanium Heating Elements to test with and I was surprised by the results.

If I was you and having so much of an issue heating your tank I would get one 500 watt and one 300 watt heater. Use the 300 watt as the main heater and the 500 to kick on IF the temp falls below .5 degrees of your lowest setting.

I have always bought my heaters at a rating of 3 watts per gallon, if that hit me between sizes I went with the larger size.

For one of these you would be looking to spend about $75 to $100 but should last you for several years to come.

I wouldn't recommend getting a 500 watt for that small of a tank, if something happened and the heater was to fail, (always seem to fail in the on position) you will boil your fish. two 250 watts will be fine, (two 300 watts tops). It is highly recommended to split the total wattage of heat to avoid that problem anyway.

The Ranco temperature controller is a great way to control that over heating problem because it basically turns the heaters on and off, bypassing the internal thermostats of the heaters. However you mentioned getting an Apex and if you are going that route a Ranco temperature controller isn't necessary because you will be able to control that through the controller.

It certainly doesn't hurt to have too many heaters, as long as your temp controller doesn't fail. I would think if you had one more then you really needed then they would run less and last longer. Just my .02

Whats the temperature in your house? You really shouldn't need 600 watts of heating in a 90, I'm getting away with half that in my 90 with the ambient temperature at 68. 600 watts should be enough to reach 80 degrees even in high 50s ambient.

Merry Christmas!

Id agree with the others and use controller and multiple smaller heaters. I've had good luck with the Jager but all well fail.

As a fail safe I like to program several mechanisms into the controller should things start to heat up.

I've got 2 200w heaters in my 55...I don't see how one heater in a tank twice the size would work.

I have a 250W Jaeger in my 92G and it keeps almost exact temp within a tenth. But I know I need a controller to keep it from sticking in the on position. One day another heater should that one fail is probably in my future.
