Flow through Fuge?
How much flow to you want to have going through your fuge? I ask because depending what the flow should be might change how I want to design my sump/fuge and the placement of everything.

Probably want a slow flow. This allows for nutrient absorption and allows pods to multiply without getting blown away. I'm not sure what an actual number would be. Really depends on the size of your fuge too.

Is there a suggested turnover rate of the volume of water in the fuge?

its almost as slow as you can make it. 2-3 times and hour is pretty good for pod growth. some macro algae likes more flow - cheato is a good example.

Flow is different depending on what you are looking for. I have a 75 gal fuge with 1-2x gph flow rate and find this helps cryptic zones, sponge & pod growth, but cheato does not grow well, needs more flow.

If you're using the fuge for pods, you want the flow to be as low as possible. As you haven't built it yet, you may want to place it on the opposite end as the drain/skimmer section. Mine is fed by a submerged spray bar, fed by a MJ600. The baffle goes all the way to the top and there are slots cut into it so it can overflow into the return section. It produces so many pods, it looks like a blizzard in my DT at night. I'll shine a bright light into the rocks and it looks like an eruption above it as they come boiling out |
