Newbie seeking start up advice

Hi all,

My wife and I purchased a used Red Sea Max and have it set up as a reef tank and it is now operational. The water is almost ready to go as per the testing results and we are seeking suggestions on what coral to start with, as well as starter fish, etc. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Steve

It would help if you provided some additional info about your tank...size, where you're at in the cycle, etc

Coral will depend on the lighting and flow you have. In general soft corals are more forgiving and could be a good start.

In general you want to plan out the fish you want in the tank and start with the more passive ones. If you start with an aggressive fish (damsel) they will torment new additions.

If you share some addt'l info and have more specific questions, let us know.

Jim,

Thanks for the response. The tank size is 65g and it has been set up and running with about 100 pounds of live rock and live sand for 4 days. I know that we are not yet ready, just excited and trying to plan ahead.

Steve

Steve, two words of advice; slow down. Nothing good happens quickly in an aquarium. You want the tank to cycle before fish and to age some before corals. You don't have to do it that way, but you won't hate the aquarium and quit the hobby in 6 weeks either.

I completely understand and will follow those guidelines.

Thanks.
