Chaeto during cycle?
Is there any reason I shouldn't put chaeto in my fuge during new tank cycle vs. waiting until after the cycle is over?

well the only thing I could think of is that there would be a possibility of the chaeto dieing because there wouldn't be enough nutrients in the water to feed it. I'm completely new at this and I am just going off what I have read that chaeto needs.

One of the "Coral" magazines issues had an article about this...
Basically it was suggested that you put some into the main tank during the cycle, it is suppose to reduce dinos and nuisance. Once things are up and running move it to the sump. There is more to the article than that, but it made a lot of sense to me, and thing it is worth doing. EDIT -- it is the Nov/Dec issue.

There's no reason not to use it during the cycle but, from experience, the Coral article may not be entirely correct. Plus it makes measuring nitrates difficult. And yes, expect some die-off until you actually have nitrates/phosphates in the system.

Thanks - seems like it should be OK, so I will proceed with caution

i thought it was discouraged because macros get rid of some ammonia/nitrite in the tank, giving you a false sense of a complete cycle, even tough the cycle hasnt completed. just imo

Seems to me it would be logical to wait a bit. would the Cheato be competing for limited nutrients with the bacteria that you want to establish?
