overflow box problem

Hi Guy's wonder if someone can help I have a sump to add to my Aquarium my next issue is with the overflow my tank isn't drilled.

The canope pretty much covers the back of the tank not allowing an overflow to be added do I have to cut away some of the canope, raise the canope or remove it?

If I cannot do any of these then should I get the tank drilled is this something thats easy to do I don't want to lose my tank which is why I was looking into an overflow box.

It depends on how tall your canopy is from the lip of the tank, what I did was remove the back board of the canopy, so that it was only 3 sided, mine was high enough to allow for an over flow box to fit under it. Is the light fixture built in to the canopy? Honestly canopies are kind of a pain in the butt, especially for salt water set ups, salt creep will get to it & they tend to keep the tank temp. higher, good for the cold months, not so good in the warmer months.

I didn't notice you mention the size of the tank? How big is it? Are you talking about adding an overflow box or adding a separate sump. If you want to add a sump and buying a pre drilled tank is out of the question, then at some point I would consider emptying the tank and have a competent LFS drill it for you.

Drilling glass is no joke, its dangerous and of course you run the risk of cracking glass.

Now if the tank is small I am sure an overflow box will be sufficient, saving you all of the above said troubles.

+1 on removing the back side if possible. If you cant take off the whole panel or don't want to, cut a hold in the back large enough to allow your overflow box to fit. As I understand your tank is already set up, and I'm assuming it is glass. I think it would be more of a pain in the rear to drill it at this point, especially weighing the risks of cracking the tank on a vertical panel with essentially no way to keep the diamond bit holesaw lubricated as it should be. I'd bet its a normal glass aquarium with a tempered glass bottom, and that cannot be drilled even if u wanted to without spider cracking the entire panel. My vote = overflow box

Another vote for an overflow box. cut an opening in the back panel of the canopy. You'll like having a sump...

The Light fixture is part of the canopy yes I'm looking at possible cutting part of the tank canopy in regards to the heat I live in Ireland even our summers aren't hot enough I don't think the lights will effect the water temp too much.

I have a 90+ gallon tank I have ordered a custom sump from a LFS the quote was very reasonable for 10mm glass. I should ask them about getting the tank drilled I don't know if they provide this service.

My tank is Not drilled which is why I was looking at the overflow box.
