Drainage Question

Do 90 degree bends matter when it comes to drainage or only on a return? Due to space I will have two 90 degree bends on my drainage from my overflow. Is that a problem?

Yes it does but there is no way to say if it will be a problem, we do not know how much water you will be pushing through it. :-)

Ok a few more details. It will be a 40 gallon tank with two 300 GPH overflows from gl*******s.com. They utilize one inch drains. I have one overflow going to a skimmer area and one to a fuge area. The fuge side is teed off so one side goes into the same drain line as the skimmer and the other goes through a ball valve into the fuge so less water pushes through the fuge area.

Main area of concern:

What return pump? I would think if you kept it about 400 gph you would have no issues,

I was going to use a Mag 5 as a return.

90 deg bends tend to restrict i try and use 45 deg bends to keep things flowing smoother there is a formula that shows what each 90 restricts and what a 45 restricts and is a lot more restriction for a 90 then a 45 - i have since lost that info but i'm sure its out there on the net someplace

The head loss and undersized piping will keep you from overpowering the returns. I don't forsee any problems. You would need 1-1/4" return piping to get the full 500 gph from the Mag minus head loss, everything should work just fine.

Thank you for the reply. That's good to hear, I threw together "Frankenpipe" from leftover parts from other builds.

I understand that, I have 9 years of leftover stuff going into my current re-build.
