Water changes

I have a fairly new 65 gal mixed reef set up. My question is - is there any difference good or bad if I do a 1 gal water change per day or a 7 gal water change once a week?

Smaller water changes done often help keep a more stable water chemistry than larger, infrequent water changes. With that said, weekly water changes would create less stress to your inhabitants than daily changes. HTH.

...this is a common question and oft addressed on many forums, and in a few magazines...

...what the previous poster said is true but from a mathematical/dilution standpoint; perhaps not so much....

its a regression problem I think (my terminology might be wrong) but whatever its called, turns out small changes might maintain trace "replenishment", but don't do much if pollution "dilution" is your goal...

....my recollection might not be accurate but I thought the sweet spot was around 25%/week... a strong disclaimer is I could be wrong....

...hopefully someone will chime in with proper facts & links

I think I get what you are saying. A larger change would do more for taking out stuff like waste, nitrates, ect, so if that's my goal- bigger is better? For trace element replenishment it probrably doesn't matter?

I do ~1% daily slowly and automatically.

I compare water change methodology here:

Water Changes in Reef Aquaria
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-10/rhf/index.php

from it:

Figure 13. An overlay of Figures 3 and 12 to allow comparison of the differences between nitrate depletion using daily and monthly water changes of the same amount changed.
