Chaeto for the fuge. And yes, I think ich can be passed from tank to tank from even a cup of water. You could keep the macro in a spare, fishless tank for a while so the possible ich will die off. Not sure how long, though.

I kept fish tanks for years before I learned that ich could transfer on plants! Good question. Not sure about a QT process though. If you come up with anything or experiment, please post.
I prefer caulerpa prolifera in the fuge. Only for aesthetic reasons, I think it's prettier than brillow pad looking chaeto, lol. There's a bunch of DT safe macros too, if you like that look.

I believe it takes about a month without fish for the ich to die off.

That's what I've heard about live spores... but is it the same for eggs?

from what i have read on RC a month should be a safe enough bet for killing ich. if your worried keep it in a QT longer to make sure.
if anyone here knows a correct time frame please post.

Now would this work... Lets say I get some macro and it does have the egg/larva form of ich in it, since there wont be any fish in my display tank for another 6 weeks all forms/stages of cryptocaryon would/should be dead by that time, right? Other question is how would I provide nutrients for the macroalgae while fish are not in the tank? Would my CUC (5 turbo's and roughly 15 nassarius) provide enough nitrates or should I ghost feed to keep nitrates up for macro to grow?

Chaeto is good, and 6 weeks is what ive seen for ich quar. As for the crew poop, it's probably not enough, but I think you should be ok. Best thing to do, is give it light and watch. It if starts shrinking in size, its probably starved of nutrients.

Raising the temp will speed up the life cycle of ich. But I would still give it at least 4 weeks

The die off time for ick in a fishless environment is 8 weeks. That gives you around a 99.7% chance I think of it all being gone. The more time you keep fish out the better chance you have of not having ick. Well that is saying that you QT your fish and make sure they don't have it before being placed in the QT. I personally would look into getting your macro from a place that keep their macros in a macro only tank where there aren't any fish.
The macros I plan on using in my fuge are chaeto, red gracillaria, and ulva. You should be using something to cycle your tank and have cycled before you add your CUC. You can do this by ghost feeding or throwing a table shrimp in and let it rot. Doing so should mean you have enough nutrients for your macro, how long will there be enough nutrients I don't know. |
