760W Over 33 Gallon Long
Is it an overkill to have 2x 250W MH + 4x 65W PC over a 33 gallon long tank? Dim: 48x12x12
(760W total). |

It'll definitely be bright. And hot.

Yes, yes it is overkill. Your electric bill will higher for no reason, and your tank temp will, well, boil. No reason for it, nothing needs that much light in a 33. You can get lower watt MH's for the shallow tank. Get a good chiller, you'll need it.

haha, i dont even have half that amount over my 118 gallon 3 foot deep tank, and my acros and anemones are fine. you'll be fine with less wattage, and also i heard too much light could actually cause hard corals to bleach. |

Yikes, I have that much wattage over my 60 gallon Even then, my Zoos bleached a bit during a 5 hour photo period from it :P
Another vote for a chiller (or even a fan blowing across the water). My tank gets pretty warm.. I set my heater for about 76 degrees and when the MHs are on, it goes up to about 82 degrees. It's a winter wonderland here, so I don't have to worry about the heat so much right now, but I can't imagine what my tank's temperature would be during the summer without a fan or chiller... :/ |

Get a bigger tank, you already have the lights for it.

As a comparison, I'm upgrading my 150 watt Sunpod for a 250 watt Hamilton Belize Sun (24") on my 29.

I would like the T5 on this tank as well, but a 4 lamp fixture as well also. Clams in the sand on this small tank.
