Kole tang strange coloration
Hi everybody, I am looking to see if some of you have seen this that my kole tang is having, let me explain. About five weeks ago I bought a kole tang from my LFS and he has been in a 20g quarantine time since then. Now he is eating mysis shrimp and brine shrimp; he so far is not eating the veggies sheets or any other type of food, I will keep trying though. But now he has lost color on his face, he has a pale face now and some little white or pale patches on one of his sides. It does not look like ich to me, nothing is coming out from these areas, so I dont know if it's some disease or maybe just diet or food problems.
Please I need to ID this so I can treat it or whatever I need to do. I will try to post some pictures now, I have nerver done it so here I go: |

So what you guys think about the color my kole tang is having? I dont know what to think, this tank has been setup for like 3 to 4 years , is well cycled. |

Wow! Something is seriously wrong, that is a severe case of HLLE. I would recheck every parameter line by line then look for any other causes i.e. stray current, refractometer calibrated correctly.....

Thanks ja4207, I just read an article about HLLE, and in a study that they did they are saying that that cause of HLLE is the use of activated carbon. So I just remove the carbon from the tank and will see what happens next. But I will continue to search for more information.
Any other advise from others members I would appreciate. thanks. |

+1 on HLLE. There's a correlation with carbon, but not a definitive causation. I think it's more likely to be dietary related, as he's not eating his greens. The rocks in your QT look pretty "clean." Ideally the Kole tang would have rock with film algae to pick on throughout the day. Perhaps soak some algae/Nori in garlic to stimulate his appetite, and rubber-band it on a rock.

Heys guys, my kole tang is not eating that well. I think He has what you guys have said, he has HLLE. Question: Is this disease transferable to other fish? If not, what if I move him to my display tank; he would have way more algae and stuff from the rocks so maybe he will start eating and get better.
What do you think? He has been in my QT for 7 weeks already. Thanks for you help again. |

HLLE isn't contagious as far as I know. Selcon is a good food supplement that I soak my fish foods in.
