Missing melanarus wrasse!
On Saturday, I brought home a melanarus wrasse which my son wanted. I acclimated it properly into my tank and it seemed to be doing fine. It didn't go for flake food but really seemd to love the small bits of shrimps. It wasn't getting bullied by any of the fish but it confined itself under a live rock but was still doing great. Since Sunday morning, I can't seem to find it.
Is it likely that he's dead? Other residents are bi-color angel, blue hippo tang, tomato clown and green chromis. Tomato is a bit aggressive but it only stays in one corner and the wrasse kept itself on the way opposite corner. |

Look all around the tank sides and the back of it might have gone "Carpet Surfing" if you have carpet. Wrasses are jumpers. I lost two to the carpet.

They hide in the substrate for several days. Feels like you won the lotto when he reappears. They tend to retreat under the sand when threatened but becomes very active swimmer once comfortable. So relax, wait a couple of days.

I forgot one other place inside the rocks if the hole is big enough for them. Mine always slept inside the holes in the rocks.

agree with the other posters. They can go missing for a few days. If it gets beyond a week then you can start to worry.

My friend "lost" a Christmas wrasse (very similar) for 3 weeks, then suddenly one day it was just swimming around like normal. They bury themselves in the sand, so don't give up hope, it's possible he's just hiding really well in there.

+1 on probably buried in the sand. I don't have a wrasse yet but is debating on getting one soon.

He popped out and made my son very very happy! I stayed out for a couple hours then when my hippo tang swam by, he drilled himself back into the sand under a liverock which was cool to see. It took him less than a second. I thought I had wasted $30 (on sale, normally $60).
