Elegance Coral hosting clownfish, is it safe?
Hi everybody. Now I read that if any LPS coral, such as a Frogspawn, hosts a clownfish, the clownfish can irritate the host to death.. unless it is an anemone. But I have also read that Elegance Coral can host clownfish but I am not sure if an ocellaris clownfish will also irritate an Elegance to death.
Will Elegance corals happily host clownfish? I really do not want an anemone because I have some vulnerable coral! |

Good luck on keeping an elegance. Those can be tough to keep alive.

True, elegance are difficult to keep as they are let alone a clown bugging them.
I've seen many keep frog or hammer w/out issues, did this myself for quite a while, though some say their clowns can be rough on some. I would have no hesitation on most euphyllia myself, but if I had an elegance I would be bummed if any of my clowns were eyeballing it.

Tang Named Junkyard and Davocean, are you guys basing your posts off what you have heard or read?
Have you had experience with one? What makes elegance difficult? thank you. Jiperalta and niteowl03, have you guys had a problem keeping your elegance corals? I read that they are moderate to keep, not as difficult as anemones. NYCBOB, HAHA! |

A while back I tried to keep one and had no success. I had a gazillion other things in the tank that were thriving. The guy warned me that they were hard to keep alive and for me he was right. There are a couple different versions I think. I think there is an Australian based species that does better.

I don't see many clowns in them in nem forum, and that is where I read most often. Nem difficulty can vary dramatically depending on species.

I have no problems with my elegance. It is in a medium flow and has 52 LEDs beaming down on him. He is thriving and I dont really see what makes them so hard to keep.

so
you've kept one elegance for just over a year? Congratulations.
In regards to this thread.. is it safe for the elegance/clownfish combo... my answer would be there's a high risk to losing the coral. Even hardy Euphyllia can succumb to the thrashings about of a clownfish in it's tentacles. In less than ideal environmental conditions an elegance coral (or ANY coral for that matter) hosting a clownfish is at high risk of a premature demise. The coral's decline can be a slow one over the course of several months or years. Or.. it could work out. Emphasis MUST be placed on maintaining the host coral's health.

I think the question concerning "difficulty" of elegance corals stems from the origin of the coral itself. As one of the posters stated they are imported from 2different places. Indonesia and Australia. The Auatralian ones fare much better than the Indonesian versions. There are several threads here at RC discussing this. As far as clownfish hosting elegance I myelf had a 3 inch elegance for about 6 months as soon as my 2 percs started hosting it it declined and they finally killed it in about 2 months. However mine was a small specimen something much larger maybe would be able to withstand all the thrashing and rubbing. As soon as the clownfish discovered my xenia garden it was heaven for them.

I had a problem with my Maroon clown annoying various coral, even a large green star polyp colony.I put in a toadstool, and the clown took to it right away and left everything else alone.i find clowns will take to leathers quite well.
