Cool Filter Media for Sump

Hello,

I did a couple searches but didn't find a lot of this, or I just can't search.

I am setting up my 75G right now and wondering what everyone does for filter media and where you put it. Right now I have a 30 gallon 3 chamber sump with a chamber 1 ready for options. Chamber two is my skimmer and three is the return.

I plan to turn chamber one into a fuge once i get the tank cycling later this week or later next week. My big question is if you run a filter media or filter floss where do you place it? I could run a filter bag but would prefer to use some filter media. I'm about to get all my water flowing and I know there will be a lot of sand and sediment in the water.

I'm excited to get my 75G rolling and this is one of my last concerns.

Thank you!

I don't know of any way to run something other than a filter sock - for a sump.

That's all I use in mine.

For removing the fines from the new sand, a canister filter with floss works great. Once you have the fines out of the water, you do not need any mechanical filtration other than a skimmer. Flossing the sump will leave you with the need to completely clean the sump once the tank is clear, you can do that but a canister filter or hang on works easier as the sediment and fines collect there and not the sump or the display.

I swap out socks every 3 to 4 days. Then, when my last one goes on i throw them all in the washing machine without soap. I little bit of bleach is OK because once they are dry, there is no chlorine left in them. I normally don't bleach them however.

If you don't use a filter sock you can put filter floss in between one of your baffles. When I started my tank I ran a phosphate pad that way.
