You can get formalin but it is hard to come by.
I had black Ich on my yellow tang. I completed a fresh water dip and then put the fish into a QT with hypo salinity. The salinity was 1.010 for 4 weeks. The black ich also has a cycle and can live in the sandbed. I made a YouTube video of this. Check it out and you can contact me with any questions. It has been just over 6 weeks with no return of the ich. Good luck!

Cool I'll check that out. I Put him in qt before I performed any dip. Did I make a mistake there? I plan on giving him a fw dip tonight after work

No mistake regarding the "dip". You could give him a FW dip. However, if there are no signs of black spots on him then I would not perform the dip.
I would start to reduce the salinity of the QT over the next several days.

My qt is already in hypo salinity. The fish was in there for ich when the black stuff showed up. I made the mistake of no qt. so he is in hypo in the qt and tonight I will perform the dip. Was just curious if dipping him then putting him back in qt was a problem or if he needs to b dipped befor having him

In the qt to begin with. Basically my concern is if I dip him then put him back in the qt is it helping at all? Or will he just get reinfected. Can the black ich breed in the qt tank if there is no substrate and it's hypo?

Monster - I hope all is going well with your fish and the QT. I did not notice you had posted again. The "ich" parasite can not live in Hypo Salinity. There should be no reinfestation with the hypo and lack of substrate. I am attaching some links for you regarding black ich. I hope this helps to explain the parasite.

Thanks for ur help. Really appreciate it. The fish seems to b ok but there is still signs of black ich. I know hypo kills ich but does that go for black ich as well? I have never been able to find a conclusive answer on this. I have never encountered this parasite before. I never got a chance to do the fw dip yet because I haven't got off work till midnight all week. If the hypo would kill it then how come he still shows signs of it? Could I have miss diagnosed him? Sorry for all the questions I just really want him to b okay. Got some funny personality. Lol

It's possible you have misdiagnosed black ich. Look at some pics of the parasite on Wet Web Media. You could also post a pic or two if it is clear enough to see.
The black spots would show up all over the fish including the fins. The parasite will def not live in hypo. However, there could be some wounds on the fish and that is what you are seeing. If the fish is healthy enough (swimming and eating well) then you could try a FW dip. After several minutes the black spots should be either gone or much less noticeable. When I performed my FW dip with the tang he was in the dip for about 15 minutes ( with careful observation) and all the black spots were gone. The black spots are due to the parasite burrowing into the fish. You are actually seeing the blood in the parasite.

I'm almost certain it's black ich. I got off work at a decent hour today so I'm hon a do It tonight. I've never done it before so I'm a little nervous. I'm gonna bring ro up to temp then I'm gonna use precision ph buffer to bring up the Ph. Do u just put the fish right in or acclimate him to it?

I just put the fish right into the FW. Make sure to monitor the fish closely. No need to worry. Some fish can only handle a couple of minutes and some can go for much longer.
Just watch the fish. The fish might lay on its side. If so, just nudge it to get it swimming. If the fish seems to be lethargic after a bit then it is time to remove and put back to the QT. It was my first time also and I had no problems. Some would not recommend dipping for such a long time. However, if the fish is doing well I feel a bit longer is better. I also feel that dipping once is better than multiple dips if it can be avoided.

So after about 8 min the fish stopped moving so I put him back in the qt and he does not too well. He is breathing but he's upside down. Is this normal? I'm pretty worried about the little guy

He is upright now. But he's not moving too much. Breathing is very rapid and he's looking around. Will he bounce back from this?
