SRO 2000int, hard time removing and putting cup on..

I purchased a 2000int afew weeks ago.
I'm still setting up my new tank, so the skimmer isn't actually running yet.
But I'm wondering if the cup is always this difficult to put on and remove.

Maybe overtime the O ring wears down and slides alittle easier, but for now I am having to apply a large amount of force to get the cup to push down into place. Removing the cup is also difficult, I find myself applying so much force that the cup lid flies off the cup once it pops free.

Does the O ring have to completly disappear into the neck to seal properly?
Does it get easier overtime? Or does everyone use the drainline instead of removing the cup?

Silicone grease would be my preference over either of the above/. It cna be found in the sink repair section of most any hardware store, HD or Lowes
