Fw dip recovery time?

I did a fw dip on my yellow tang due to black ich. He was in there for 8 min and started to stop moving so I took him out and put him back in qt. he does not look well at all. I matched the ph and temp perfectly. He is just kinda laying there and breathing heavy. Is this normal? It's been about 20 min and does not seem to b coming out of it. The ich is not that bad but I fear I may have done more damage then good. Is this normal for him to do this? I'm pretty worried about this little guy

I've read that alkalinity can be very difficult to maintain with hypo. How is your alkalinity?

Figured I'd ask, because someone else is sure to want your full parameters.

I honestly could tell u right now. I just set it up. But before I did the dip he looked great. Other then the ich he was swimming around and looked happy. My gf figures it is shock from the dip. It's been over a hour now and he's still just laying there. I got the tank coverd so it's dark. I'll check the Params when I get back home

8 mins on a fw dip is pretty long, 2 mins should be plenty any pests on him should rupture and fall off pretty fast in fw

I agree, about 4 minutes is what I target for a fresh water dip. 8 minutes may have been excessive.

I heard anywhere from 5 to 30 mins when I was reasearching. He ended up dying. I kept him in there as long as he looked good. Then when I returned him to the qt he just laid on his side and breathed heavy. I should have left him alone. Sucks he was a friendly fish.

yeah 8 minutes is a little long. im sorry to hear about your loss. for future reference though tangs are prone to being drama queens during fw dips. they like to play dead even if they are fine. ps i prefer a 30 sec- 1 minute sw dip with methythylene blue instead. that way you can just use tank water and it helps calm the fish down

Yeah it's too bad. At least I know for next time. Will probably avoid it in the future unless the fish is worse off.

Monster,

I am very sorry to read about the loss of your yellow tang. FW dips are usually very good for the fish. However, sometimes we loose some fish during the process. As I mentioned I lost my Karma Angel after a FW dip. All my other fishes did very well. Weather we use a FW dip or Formalin( which causes cancer) to treat our fish there is always the risk our fish will not fair well.
