pulsating BK mini180

hello to all, first post here. have a technical question about my skimmer (bubble king 180).
recently i noticed that its began pulsating the flow and then eventually shuts down. I have taken apart the red dragon pump and it was clean throughout, but i cleaned it somemore. took note that there was no rubbing marks on the rotor part of the shaft, collars/sleeves(aka bearings). the problem seems to be a bit better after taking it apart and putting it back together, but eventually it began pulsating again.

ive noticed that it stops "catching" or pulsating when I apply pressure with my finger on the needle wheel. there is some play in the wheel (back and forth within the motor block). im wondering how much play everyone else has, should it be tight? or if anyone else has experienced this and has some solutions?

cheers
