proper aclimation technique
in general i know how to properly aclimate a fish. However, here is my dilemma at the moment.
I am getting a powder blue tang. I have a qt set up that is a 40 gallon with a yellow eye cole in there. I have previously successfully qt'd tangs together using eggcrate to ward off part of this tank to make sure tangs get used to eachother. It worked well. Here is my issue. The tank is currently in hypo already. Its at 1.009 as directed. Pow blue is coming in in water thats 1.020 or so. Is there a safe way to aclimate the pow blue to be put straight into hypo? (via drip acclimation or other methods). Thanks! |

There are different views on this, since tangs are sensitive I would suggest doing a 30 minute acclimation (drip style). If the tang is dying I would probably just hope for the best and try a fresh water drip for a couple of minutes and then put it directly into the QT.

I use some air line tubing and make a syphon effect and then I tie one end in a knot and thats how I drip until the amount of water has at least doubled then I would check your salinity, and continue if needed.
I hope that helps

I will do that but if i put him into say a 3 gallon container w an airstone, while I drip into there, how would it drip if you tie the airline?

just tie a knot in the bottom after you start the syphon then adjust the tightness of the knot to allow water to drip how you want it to
tighten it to slow the drip loosen it to give more flow

You can keep the siphon even with a knot in the air line tubing. Like Brain said, just tighten the knot to adjust for a slower drip. After fifteen minutes I usually loosen the knot to allow for a little faster flow rate.

IMO, if they have a good QT regimen and plenty of room; they are very hardy.
To the OP: Remember that however you acclimate, the QT timetable for the Kole goes back to day 1. I haven't used hypo in years and don't know how long a fish can tolerate Sg at 1.009. You may need to raise SG for a while and start over. Someone will chime in on this.

i agree with MrTuskfish, time for kole goes back to day 1, also a drip method is the way i would go if i were you.

I wouldn't add another Tang at the moment. It would be best to wait till after the existing fish has finished the process. Otherwise if you must rush this, then I would bring the QT Sg up slowly over the period of a few days to match the shipping water. Then acclimate the new fish to the QT and start the QT process over for everything that is in the Tank.
Bringing in a new fish and drip dropping it's Sg that much in a very short period of time is dancing with death IMO. It's best to take your time when it comes to these types of things. |
