Causes for a drastic pH change?

I'm currently in the process of cycling my tank... Day 5 with no changes.... I think I might put some imaginary fish in the tank, so I have something to feed =P

While it's been steady with no changes for today, the exception is today's pH. I've just had a drastic reduction in my pH. It's been 8.0 every day, except tonight. I just tested it, and it came out as 7.4 I had turned the flow down by just a little bit. I didn't think that it could cause such an effect...

My concern is the bacteria and coralline algae on my live rock. Are they kaput now? Can I save them?

I thought I knew what I was doing, and had read enough to have a handle on cycling my tank.... I feel so ill equipped and lost right now.

7.4 is a bit low. air out the area where ur tank is. open window put a fan or something. low ph is due to co2 build up. or it could be a bad reading. double check.

Ph can drop during the night when your lights are off. When my main tank lights are off that's when the light in my sump turns on to keep the ph from dropping.

A cycling tank often sees ph drops. No big worry yet. 7.4 is almost low enough to make me think you've got a testing issue. How are you measuring ph?
