Hermit Crabs Dying?!

i have had 2 red legged hermit crabs leave their shells and die.
possible reasons why?

Are you sure they're dead and not just molted? Do you have extra, larger shells for them to move in to? Are there any predators in your tank that might kill them, triggers, mantis shrimp, etc.? What are your water parameters?
