I apologize, but I have never used a canister filter. Only have used a skimmer... but at least it's a free bump to get your question answered. Thought you may hve been talking about filters for you RO/DI system. Best of luck

It depends what sort of media you are running in it...
On freshwater tanks it would be cleaned every month or 6... in saltwater if you are running sponge, or the ceramic bio media I hear it should be cleaned as often as weekly. If all you are running is carbon and gfo in it, you maybe able to go longer...
