Have you used compression fittings in your plumbing?

I was watching This Old House last night and they used compression fittings to join PVC instead of gluing. Have people done this or is it not advised because of the constant flow of water of our tanks as opposed to the more intermittent flow of a sink drain? I am upgrading to a RR tank and have to think about plumbing for the first time. It's a little overwhelming because I want to do it right the first time. Thanks for the help!

If i remember correctly those fittings have metal barbs in them, should not touch the water but who knows what they were designed for, I shy-ed away from them for that reason, but like i said if those dont touch the water, they would work fine. doesnt help much
