High tank temp?

Our tank has been up and running for about 6 mounths, over the past few weeks the temp has reached 82,83 degrees. I have tried keeping light off, hood open and I still cant figure out why the temp stays so high? The room temp maintains about 72* so we know its not that.......any ideas?

check out your pumps and power heads. Put some RODI water in and ice cube tray and add them to the tank to help keep your temp down until you figure out whats causing ur high temp.

If you have glass tops it's really going to trap the heat in. I recommend clear mesh 1/4 inch netting tops instead of the glass tops. It allows for much better gas exchange too.

I had the same problem coming into summer. My tank temp used to get up to about 83-84 and it freaked me out. I looked into a chiller, but I ended up putting a clip on fan blowing onto the sump. I can keep it at 78 through the summer. One thing you need to watch is the evaporation...I go through about 2 1/2 gallons a day in topoff water.

My temp goes from 76 to 82.5 every day and everything is happy. I'm not going to do anything until it hits 85

I just realized who the OP was, she has an Red Sea Max 250 as well. Pumps and Hood are built in, there is very little evaporation. 3 gallons a week is about the best I can get. There are are fans for the lights, but they are seperated from the water by a plastic shield, so even they don't hit the water.

Try turning on the aux fans (switch by the moonlight switch by the light timer), those blow air out from the surface of the water. I don't use them because of the noise.

I am similar with about 77 at night to 84 by lights out. No issues and will only add the fan if I hit 85 too.

OK thanks everyone, at least some of you have the same tank so you have an idea of what I am dealing with. Everything seems to be happy but I didnt want to run into any issues before I had to. I have a plastic water bottle in freezer with RODI water in it, I was going to try to let it float with cap off so as it melts the water could just add to the tank. I very rearly have to top off as I do a 10-15% water change faithfully every weekend. As far as the back cooling fan that stays running non-stop and the two cooling fans on each side of the hood are clear and running as well, I just can for the life of me figure oiut what is creating the heat !! Heater and entire set up is basically brand new. I was told to change carbon every 4-6 weeks, is that what you guys who run RSM do with yours?

82F is not high at all for a reef. Do some research on reef temps.

your tank will be fine in temps up to 85-86 as long as u can keep temp swing to a minimum. a maximum 3 degree temp swing is recommended.

Yes, and quick swings are far more serious than those that occur over several hours. BTW, some natural reef temps can approach 90F.
