base and live rock help
I am planning to have a 50g tank and 30g sump. I am a new to saltwater tank. I am planning to have a fish only with some live rocks (coral will add in the future but not now), because live rock are so expensive and I am wonder if I can use some base rock and some live rock instead 100% live rock. What are the base rock should I use, any specific rock that use for saltwater tank?
Please help. Thanks, |

That's a smart plan. I got 90% dry rocks (check out RC sponsors bulkreefsupply.com, marcorocks.com, and reefrocks.net) and seeded with 10% live rocks (either from LFS or a fellow reefer in your area who's selling).

Yes, You can have some of both. As long as you have some LR it will help the other rock mature quicker. Good Luck

I used all dry rock in my 75. 40lbs BRS reef saver, 30lbs BRS Fiji, and 20lbs BRS Pukani. I went to my lfs yesterday and picked up a few small pieces of live to help seed the rest.

Either will work, all live, all dry or any combination of the two. There are advantages and disadvantages to either.

I went to Key Largo, picked up a bunch of dead dry rock near some mangrove island and let whatever was submerged in the water die and let it sit in my backyard for a month. Basically it was dry rock. I went to Petco and picked up 1 piece of LR that was the size of my fist, and let it seed the entire 20 gallon tank. It took a while, but it worked.

When I set up my 40B I used about 95/5 ratio of base rock to live rock. I'm 6 months in and unless you knew which was the base vs the live you'd have a hard time telling the difference.
