remove skimmer from sump?

I have a 20 gallon sump under a 55-gallon tank. it's narrow, about 12" inches wide and 26" long. The filter sock area takes up about a third of it. Then there's a narrow compartment separated by a baffle, and next to that is the larger holding my protein skimmer and return pump.

I was thinking of using the sump as a refugium. I could get an HOB refugium, but they seem expensive. Another possibility is a reef octopus hob skimmer that I have but am not using at the moment. I could hang that on the tank and remove the sump skimmer, creating more space in the sump (I'm hoping to use it to grow macroalgae and copepods.

Or is this all unnecessary overthinking and I just could use that narrow space (about three inches by 12 inches and maybe six inches high) next to the sock chamber to grow what I need?

thanks for any info,

jeff
