is it possible to paint on coraline algae??
I found some 50lbs of L.R. and was curing it. Looks like it been sitting outside for a while. I got it all rinsed off and set up as much as I could fit into my 10gl spare tank but I noticed this rock had a funny pattern to the purple/bluesish tint on the rock [IMG]http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u368/MtRichieIII/S
napbucket/D7F2443C-orig.jpg[/IMG] So I was wondering if it was painted on would it be harmful? Idk I'm just imagining they painted this rock and it didn't go well so they ended up scrapping the tank or something. Or is painting live rock a common practice? |

I doubt somebody would go trough the trouble of painting their rock rather that letting mother nature take her course. I personally have never heard of people painting their rock. If the rock came from a set up you are unfamiliar with I'd say there rocks were just positioned in a way that exposed the areas you see covered in coralline and when you moved it to your curing tank you changed the previous aquascape revealing the weird patterns you see. Just my 0.02!

I think most of the real reef (Eco rock) is dyed!

Seriously, you really believe that? Why?
I don't know of anybody who would paint rock (or dye real reef rocks) to put in an aquarium. I know somebody out there now is making new (fake) rock that is colored to look like it has coraline on it. But it happens soon enough if you keep a good system for a year or more.

Idk if y'all can see the "weird pattern" I mentioned, its the dark purple area center of rock. Looks like "splatter" from something spraying. I've been patiently waiting for my rock to take its natural course in my biocube 14. I don't see why anyone would paint the rock wither but...people do crazy things sometime. There was another piece that had red and yellow covering it. Unless this is some algae I've never seen before I would say it's painted so I tossed that rock. But then I took notice to what I initially thought was good coraline growth, and wanted to find out if this was normal. From what y'all are saying I guess not. LOL it does look like a good paint/dye job...whatever it is.

Dont doubt this. This has been a topic quite a few times cause people dont wanna wait for coralline to grow on its own. Real reef rock is a popular product for those impatient people. I dont see myself paying $6/lb for dry rock. Just cause I want it purple now. Ill wait |

Paint in a tank wouldn't last long: it'd peel off, likely, as the limestone dissolved, and then become a problem---besides probably not being reef safe or fish safe to start with.
