GFO not tumbling in reactor okay?

Hi,

I just changed my GFO from ROWAPhos to PURA Phoslock.

I am using a lower flow pump for the GFO than carbon, an Eheim 1046 which is rated at 80 gph. With the ROWAPhos I was able to get the proper boiling or tumbling motion, however after adding the new GFO media I am not.

Here's a picture of it right now with the full 80 gph flow.

Given the lack of tumbling how much less efficient is the reactor now? Or do you think that it is alright?

Thanks,

PJ

Not so much lack of efficency but with out the proper flow what you want to watch out for is clumping of the media. That is why it is even recommended on pumps that are dialed down to give the system a full blast every once in awhile to make sure everything is freed up. What type of reactors are you using? 80gph seems to low for most of the reactors with GFO especially if you are combining carbon into the mix.

NextReef MR1 reactors.

The carbon is running on a separate reactor with a standalone 180 gph pump.

I will keep and eye out for the clumping.

GFO needs more flow than carbon, if it was me I would switch the pumps.

+1 on this. sounds like your reactor flows are backwards for each media.

another trick to see if your media is flowing correctly is to add some sand to it and watch it as it tumbles/bubbles the media.
