Which of these 2 sump designs?

Hi all, first time poster here. I am amazed by all the knowledge on this forum and am looking for some advice. I'm planning my 50 gal cube build and have come up with 2 sump designs. The sumps overall dimensions will be 22x14x16 based on my stand design and will be built from acrylic.

Planning an external overflow with BeanAnimal drains. Return will be split to the refugium section. Planning on a Tunze Silence 1073.040 unless I think I need to upgrade to the next larger size due to the Tee.

Sump1 has a longer bubble trap run, but I'm not sure if turning the corner will create more turbulence. The Return pump section is larger in this one.

Sump2 is a more standard design, but the bubble trap area looks small.

Of course with the BeanAnimal drain, it might be a moot point anyway.

What changes would anyone suggest? Or which design to go with?

What is the section labeled "Bio" going to hold?

Please don't say BioBalls. Please don't say BioBalls. Please don't say BioBalls. Please don't say BioBalls.

Welcome to RC, btw.. For a 50 cube you may want a larger pump. How much GPH you going to send thru your fuge? What size drain?

LOL no bio-balls my first fowlr 90g had those before I knew better.

The first section will host the Protein Skimmer and Bio-Reactor (the squares represent the footprint of each device). I'm looking to use a Cadlights conic TIA-1150 Skimmer and the Cadlights conic Bio-Reactor.

I was thinking around 150 gph for the fuge - thoughts?

The Tunze Silence 1073.040 was sized to give me about 500 gph, but that was before I learned to split the fuge supply from the return instead of the drain. I will prob increase that to the next size up, need to look at the pumps again. Was also looking at the Eheim 1260 and Sicce Syncra 3.0 pumps. Will review all the pumps again today; will supplement tank flow a vortech.

So the main differences are the bubble traps, any issue with the bubble trap in Sump1? Both are using Over-Under-Over.

Ok after reviewing the pumps am upgrading to the Tunze Silence 1073.05 which will connect to my Neptune Apex (once aquired).

Any thoughts as to viability of the bubble trap in the sump1 plan? If no positive feedback, then I will probably go with Sump2 since that is a proven method.

Hi Lortaal, I noticed you are using a CONIC bio-pellet reactor in your build. Would you recommend one? I'm thinking about buying one since they claim you can control the output with the 3 way valve.
