Why is my skimmer doing this?

This started happening very recently. Nothing has been added to the tank.

Green algae bubbling out of the holes on the top?

Not algae, just skimmate.

How much deeper would the ocean be if it didn't have sponges?

Skimmers can be touchy. Try making some slight adjustments, and wait for a few hours to a day. From time to time, my skimmer will do the same thing. My over flows when the skimate is wet, and if I overfeed.

If the skimmer is directly attached to the aquarium, HOB, it will be dependent on evaporation, once you add top off skimmers tend to run wet. Minor adjustments are usually needed!
