They are destroying reefs by people introducing them into areas that arent their natural habitat. Florida and North Carolina have a major problem with them. Some places even offer money for them. Even in the carribean, I believe, they are using them as a food source since they are so abundant.

There are posters by a lot of the docks warning people about them, and providing a bit of info (dont toss them back, spines, etc.)
I've seen a few recipes for lionfish, and they apparently are quite good. They are not incredibly common (yet) but the goal behind releasing and publicizing recipes is to try to get more people to get target the lions and remove them before they can get worse. Having no natural predators allows them to perfectly move into the local ecosystem, and out-compete (and/or eat) existing species.

While diving in cozumel the divemaster was using a metal spear to kill them . He would have 4 or 5 of them on the spear then we would find a moray eel to eat them up. I guess the eels can't catch them on their own.

its ashame they have to kill them, they are an extremely beautiful fish...but we can't have them ruining the reef systems due to the explosion in over-population.

Its not the fishes fault, its the people who release them where they are not supposed to be.

I have read that you need to be careful when eating lionfish due to Ciguatera, a food poison brought on by eating reef fish.

Eating large or older fish would increase the risk, but a dozen small 6-7 in. ones would be good eating.

How much deeper would the ocean be if it didn't have sponges?

Lionfish

More news on this. This is fascinating in a bad way. Sounds like the only natural predator they have in their native habitat is a Grouper which apparently has been over fished.
