Utilty Pumps?
I have a 1/6 horsepower flotec submersible sump/utility pump, is that fine for a tank or is there something wrong with using utility pumps?

They have exposed metal parts. I used one for years as a pump to get my water from my 55g barrel in the basement to the 60g in the living room, but it was in the water just long enough to do it's job and then rinsed well when done. Even then they will only last a year or two. I got tired of buying new ones. I finally got smart and got a mag18 (should have gone one size larger, btw)

If you absolutely have to, I would use it for no more than one day and to be honest I would rather have no return pump for a day and leave my Vortech pumps on inside my display tank, rather than run the risks associated with using the utility pump. Just out of curiosity, how many gallons is your entire system?
