Utilty Pumps?

I have a 1/6 horsepower flotec submersible sump/utility pump, is that fine for a tank or is there something wrong with using utility pumps?

They have exposed metal parts. I used one for years as a pump to get my water from my 55g barrel in the basement to the 60g in the living room, but it was in the water just long enough to do it's job and then rinsed well when done. Even then they will only last a year or two. I got tired of buying new ones. I finally got smart and got a mag18 (should have gone one size larger, btw)

I use a utility pump when doing water changes but not as a return pump. As stated above, they have exposed metal parts and are not recommended.

Technically you can, but utility pumps also tend to give off lots and lots of heat.

To put that in perspective I used my utility pump a couple times to mix salt-water in a 50 gallon drum while I was fixing my Magpump. The water temperature went from 65 degrees to over 85 degrees in one day and thats without lights or a heater. Utility pumps are not made to remain on for days at a time. If you absolutely have to, I would use it for no more than one day and to be honest I would rather have no return pump for a day and leave my Vortech pumps on inside my display tank, rather than run the risks associated with using the utility pump.

Just out of curiosity, how many gallons is your entire system?
