question about acan growth and behavior

Hello! I purchased my first acan last week. It's looking bright and actively eats when I spot feed. My question is about growth. Do acans always add new polyps to the outside edge, or can new polyps emerge between current polyps?

This morning I saw one of current polyps extended upward like it was stretching its neck, and down near the base I could see what looked like a new polyp emerging. Could that be the case? And is it normal for the polyps to extend upward?

Here's a photo of the whole little colony, but I didn't catch it when the middle polyp was extended.

yes it will grow baby acans on the side .. acans will stretch upwards all the time .. it could have been trying to reach for food or just opening up for the light ..

I have a few acan colonies sprouting babies in the middle as well as on the outside. So yes, it is possible.

Alright cool. Glad all's well. It's funny how quickly you get attached to such a (relatively) simple organism.

Yeah. I'm an acan-aholic. My new reef already has 5 beautiful acan colonies. If you want babies fast and aren't concerned with keeping the water "sps" clean I recommend feeding them 3 times a week with a mix of reef roids, pe mysis, and a few drops of sel con mixed in a cup of tank water. Turn off the circulation for 10 minutes and spot feed them with a baster or coral feeding tool. Like I said...wouldn't recommend this if you need really clean water for sps corals.
