Angels

Is there any angel that is reef safe? The more I read the less likely it is I will get one.

I think the dwarf angles are considered semi freef safe. Ive had a coral beatuy and a flame angel fo a while now and have never seen them go after my corals.

The only ones that I know of that are considered reef safe are Lamarck's , Swallowtails , Watanabeis, and Bellus Angelfish.

Others are hit or miss. Some may be fine and others will nip. I've taken the chance with flames, coral beauty, and multicolor, and so far haven't had problems...with a big YET at the end of the sentence!

Flame and an Eibli in a 240 here with no problems so far. I agree with everyone that says to keep them well fed to avoid coral munching.
Good luck.

I have a dwarf bicolor angel in my 75 and he's been a good boy. He only nips at algae on the rocks and leaves the corals alone.

Angelfish are a hit and miss when it comes to keeping them in a reef tank it really comes down to each individual fish. Dwarf Angelfish have a better track record of not picking at coral compared to larger angel fish though. So if you decide to get one a dwarf angel is your best bet.Hope this helps.

Genicanthus angels are typically considered reef-safe. Dwarf angels very much tend to be hit or miss. I have a Pomocanthus juvenile in my tank who bothers nothing...yet

My flame picks at my SPS. Not incessantly, but enough that it's bugging me. Next remodeling he's probably going elsewhere.

I have seen SPS dominated tanks that had two regal angels. I did see the one angel was removed but it was because it was picking on the other. I have also seen gold flake angels kept with success but again these are with mainly being kept with SPS corals. I don't thin zoanthids and angela mix to well. I've done a ton of research on this because I wanted an angel but also wanted a mix reef. Im still in the build process so I don't know from personal experience.

Sorry but auto correct sucks. I ment to say zoanthids and angels typically don't do well together.

Watanabei, Bellus and Lamarck's are generally considered the most "reef safe" of the large angels. All of the dwarfs are very hit or miss. I find feeding 2-3 times a day helps.

No. In fact my clowns nip at my coral every now and then. IMO the only reef safe fish is a dead one and even those can take down a tank when dead. Good luck.

+1 I have a female Maroon that will push over or attack any coral I put too close to her anemone.

I have both a pygme and a flame in my 60g cube. They are both doing just fine. The pygmy has been in there for 7+ years, the flame for about 3. No problems with them nipping corals. Can't say the same about new fish additions......

I had a coral beauty for awhile until my tank crashed due to a snow storm... go figure it was the last fish to die, and did so RIGHT before power came back... It never picked at corals and was a great fish. Its pretty hit or miss like everyone else has been saying.
